Bowen Home Instructions

Asthma Exercise

Hold the ribcage with both hands. Press in while taking a deep breath. Continue pressure on the exhale. Repeat as many times as is comfortable. Do exercise throughout the day to strengthen muscles surrounding the chest cavity.

After your first two weeks of Bowen, you will be instructed in the asthma move over Point 8 to use on yourself during a breathing emergency.

If asthma is not corrected completely by the Bowen, then all dairy must be eliminated from the diet, including the milk or lactose in prepared foods.

 Breast Massage the Bowen Way

This should be performed on yourself once a week, either standing or sitting. It increases lymph drainage under the breast tissue, encouraging the area to remain free of toxic build-up.

First notice the position of your nipple. The moves will be performed at nipple line, but under the breast tissue instead of over it. So we will be moving the breast tissue out of the way, but orienting our moves to where the nipple usually rests.

Use your left hand to press the top of your left breast downward. Place the length of your right first finger along the top of your left hand, centered at about nipple line. Take a deep breath, and let it out. Now move both hands together toward the side of your body, keeping your hands "superglued" to your skin instead of sliding over it. Attempt to pull your skin to the side without putting any pressure at all on the tissue underneath it.

Now perform the move back toward the midline of your body, with a slight bit more pressure. Move as far as the skin will let you without sliding over it. Release.

Now with your left hand, lift your left breast. At about nipple line, place the pad of your right first finger. Take a deep breath, and let it out. Draw the skin this time toward your midline first, moving both hands together. Then with a bit more pressure, perform the move toward the side of your body as far as the skin will allow.

Reverse the procedure on your right breast.

Bunion and Bone Spur Soak

Instructions:

Dissolve 2 T. Epsom salts in a small basin of hot water. Soak 20-30 minutes per night, then rub in a small bit of Iodex, and go to bed.

If the metatarsal joint is inflamed or immobile, this soak should be done for 4-6 weeks before the first Bowen treatment on the bunion. If at that time it is still inflamed, Bowen treatments may be done on it monthly until it loses heat and gains mobility.

Once it is not tender and inflammed, Bowen may be done each week while soaking continues. This soak is very effective -- the magnesium in the Epsom salts penetrates the skin and binds with the calcium deposit to gradually dissolve it away.

Iodex aids in this process -- it contains iodine, which also bonds with calcium; oil of wintergreen, which promotes blood flow in the area; and aspirin, which thins local blood flow and eases pain.

Order Iodex from your local pharmacy (it is usually not on the shelf, but sometimes it is in the catalogues and can be ordered). You will want to order the Iodex with methyl salicylate (aspirin).

Iodex may be ordered from: Lee Pharmaceuticals

After the bunion breaks up, use Dr. Scholls toe divider to encourage toe straightening.

Hamstring Exercise

Stand holding on to something for balance.

On looser side first, place toes on floor behind you. Straighten same side arm chest high in front of you.

1. Leg straight, swing it up towards your hand, then let it drop to floor.

2. Raise your knee to the waist. Return toes to floor behind you.

Do 6 times this leg, then 6 times other leg. Can repeat, if desired.

This exercise is more effective than any other hamstring stretch you may know. It is now used by soccer teams all over Australia .

 Kidney Instructions

For the next 2 weeks, include a bit of raw beet in your diet every day.

Get a small to medium fresh beet, peel the outer layer away, then use about a 1/4" slice. You can grate it onto a salad or a bowl of soup, put it on a sandwich, or eat it plain with a squeeze of lemon. You will find it is quite sweet and delicious.

It will turn your urine and stools red, so do not be alarmed!

The beet acts as a blood purifier to tone the kidneys and liver. Drink at least 2 quarts of steam-distilled water, 1/2 cup at a time, each day during this 2-week period.

Pelvis Exercise

Do this lying in bed, once each morning. It doesn’t matter if you have gotten up to ur inate first.

Starting with looser side first, drag your heel on the bed up to buttocks -- do not lift the leg as you bend your knee. Now lift your foot in the air as you straighten your leg as high up in your range as possible. Then slowly lower your leg to the bed, using your muscles to set it down gently.

Do 6 times with this leg, then 6 times with the other.

Shoulder Exercise #1

Do once every morning.

Stand straight and relaxed. With looser arm first, begin to circle your arm as close to 360° as possible.

Imagine a giant sundial flat at your side, and let your arm trace around its face, remembering that it extends in back of you as well as in front. Explore the whole range of motion you have just short of any discomfort. Do not push past that edge into pain,, it only tightens the muscles and defeats the purpose. So modify the circle as needed, then move back onto the track of the sundial as soon as you comfortably can. Keep your neck relaxed, and breathe.

Let your arm drop for a moment between circles so each one is a separate movement.

Do 6 circles in one direction, then with the same arm, do 6 in the other direction. It doesn't matter which direction is first.

Then do 6 circles each direction with the other arm.

If you hear grinding in the joint, that is fine -- you are breaking up calcification formed while the shoulder was restricted. These circles will literally grind it away until the joint is fully free again.

Shoulder Exercise #2

Do as soon as arm can lift past 90° once every morning.

This exercise is the reverse of the previous one; whereas first you circled your arm around a stationary body, now you will circle your body around a stationary arm.

Start on the side of the looser arm first. Stand with this side to the wall or the edge of a door frame.

Place your hand at shoulder height, palm flat, fingers pointed up, elbow straight. Now stand just far enough away that you are leaning into the wall with a slight pressure, and keep that angle in your body to maintain that pressure throughout the exercise.

1. Walk in place toward your arm, closing up your body as the back of the shoulder stretches. Hold for a moment. Drop shoulder, relax neck.

2. Walk in place away from your arm, opening up your body as the front of the shoulder stretches. Drop shoulder, relax neck.

Do this series 6 times with this arm, then 6 times with other arm.

TMJ Instructions

Avoid extending your jaw fully over the next week. When you yawn, modify it slightly so it doesn't hit the farthest reach of your open range. Do not receive dental work requiring your mouth to be held wide open. Avoid large bites of food such as an apple; instead, cut it and eat it in slices. Let your jaw find its correct alignment by giving it time in its normal range.
